The Cathedral Floor is the result of an artistic project developed over several centuries, from the 14th to the 19th century. Its 56 marble panels were based on designs by some of the leading artists of their time, almost all of them Sienese, with the notable exception of Pinturicchio, who created the Allegory of the Hill of Wisdom in 1505.

The earliest technique involved engraving white marble with chisels and drills and then filling the incisions with black stucco, creating what is known as graffito. Over time, the process became increasingly sophisticated, with marbles of different colors being cut and set alongside one another using the marble inlay technique.
The result is a remarkable visual narrative that unfolds through the nave, transept, and choir.

Hermes Trismegistus, the Sibyls, the She-Wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, the Hill of Wisdom, the stories of Elijah and Ahab, and episodes from the life of Moses are just some of the subjects that form a journey in which art, philosophy, history, and spirituality are constantly intertwined.

The work is so extraordinary that Giorgio Vasari described it as one of the most beautiful, grand, and magnificent floors ever created.
