The Via Francigena: A Journey to Discover the Soul

One of its most famous stretches connects Canterbury to Rome. It was precisely because Siena was situated along this route that the city began its economic, political, and social ascent during the 14th century. From that moment on, Siena became a cornerstone of the pilgrimage of faith—a journey during which the body also required sustenance. Thus, the city established a "Spedale" (Hospital), known today as the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex. In addition to caring for the sick and orphans, it was dedicated to welcoming pilgrims on their way to the Holy See.

Over the centuries, the route solidified into a primary road toward Rome, eventually being replaced by more direct routes as modern transportation evolved. Yet, the search for the spirit is inextricably linked to the physical experience. For this reason, the Francigena has evolved once again, becoming a destination in its own right: a physical journey in pursuit of the spirit.

On this path of self-discovery, the modern pilgrim follows a road shaped by the unique Tuscan landscape, winding through the rolling Sienese hills and offering unparalleled views of both the countryside and the city.

Entering through Porta Camollia, the Francigena cuts through the historic center, helping to create the city’s famous "Y" layout from which all secondary streets radiate. The path crosses the heart of Siena, the magnificent Piazza del Campo, before exiting through Porta Romana. Indeed, it is the final destination—Rome—that gives its name to this gate in the ancient walls of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

From here, the pietra serena paving gives way to gravel and grass, flowing into a striking landscape adorned with cypresses, wildflowers and, in summer, golden expanses of wheat. In these places, a sense of peace reigns supreme, amidst the quiet of the open air and endless greenery, interrupted only by the presence of local residents like pheasants and roe deer.

A gentle spring breeze often nudges travelers along the Francigena, though many embrace the journey during the summer months when the landscape and its wonders transform. While in the past faith alone guided the way, today more than ever, the need to rediscover one’s essence—or simply the tranquility of the outdoors—motivates countless people, athletes and amateurs alike, to traverse this itinerary every year, and not only on foot.

Many choose to immerse themselves in this bucolic atmosphere on horseback or with donkeys. The mountain bike is certainly one of the most popular ways to experience the path, so much so that the area has hosted numerous cycling events, including the 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2021. However, whether running or simply walking, one can fully savor every facet of the route, from its visual beauty to its culinary delights. The Sienese territory is dotted with hamlets and hills where quality and tradition are expressed through a cuisine rich in game, aged cheeses, and notes of fine wine—a unique masterpiece ready to regenerate the body, mind, and heart.
