Fai Autumn Days 2017

Discover the city in its secret spaces. Those who are no longer accessible for years and still represent important places to understand the identity of a city. Here is what you can do on Sept. 15 in Siena and in many other Italian cities, thanks to the initiative of Fai, the Italian Environment Fund, an organization that deals with restoring and opening to the public monuments and unique places in Italy. Every year in many Italian cities, these places are open to the public exclusively for a day, during which Fai volunteers explain to visitors the history of the places to visit.

Siena: 2017 Fai days

This year the group of volunteers from the local Siena Fai section will organize a special itinerary dedicated to the Siena of Pope Alexander VII. A pope who helped to change the city's appearance, bearing the influences of Baroque style.

The itinerary begins with the church of San Raimondo at Refugio, a masterpiece of Baroque art. A little further goes on towards the Collegiate Insignia of Santa Maria in Provenzano, and then towards the Church of San Vigilio with the tomb of Antonio Rospigliosi (here are some works of Bernini) and the chapel of Taja, to which he worked Ercole Ferrata , a Bernini collaborator.

Before arriving at Piazza Duomo, a wonderful example of the works promoted by the Prince Medici and financed by Pope Alexander VII, there will be a final stop at the church of San Martino, a place where Baroque style has one of its highest expressions thanks to the sculptures of Giuseppe Mazzuoli, Sienese student of Bernini.
